Types of Pu-erh Trees
The question of what kind of tree is used to make puer is far from idle. The fact is that the classification of the tea itself depends on the type of puer tree, and one of the determining criteria here is the age of the plants.
For the vast majority of Chinese tea varieties, the source of raw materials is the tree-like bushes of Camellia sinensis. However, this plant has subspecies that can grow up to several meters in height and live for hundreds of years. These tea trees are usually classified by age:
- Young (50 to 100 years old). This tea is called Xiaoshu cha in China.
Their leaves have a bright, fresh flavor, but they are not as complex as those of older trees. - Large / tall (100 - 300 years old). This tea is called Dashu cha in China.
The leaves of these trees give a more balanced taste and aroma. - Old (300 - 500 years) or Laoshu cha .
Pu-erh from old trees is especially prized for its balanced taste and bright, lingering aftertaste. - Ancient (about 500 years or more) or Gushu cha .
This tea is one of the most elite varieties with unique taste properties. The famous Gushu Puer from Bingdao are examples of puer made from raw materials from ancient trees.
