The third tea tasting in ChL for August 2015 was a great success. On Friday, 21.08, we tasted sheng pu-erhs. This time, 11 people participated, not counting the tea master. The tea was brewed in the same gaiwan, 10 grams at a time (as in previous tastings). Bottled water and an electric kettle with a thermometer were used for brewing. First, the tasters assessed the appearance of the dry tea leaf and its aroma in a heated gaiwan. Then, after washing the sheng, 3 cups of tea were provided for testing: the first cup showed a soft version of tea, the second one was more open, and the third gave a feeling of strong, tart, hard sheng.
The winner of this tasting was the 2012 sheng puer of the Hongzhonghong brand – the 400-gram cake “Yubileiniy Tea” scored 4.5 points out of 5 possible. The 100-gram nest “Feng Yao” from the Xiaguan plant received second place and 4.47 points. Third place went to the 2013 sheng from the Otkryi Svoe Schastli plant with a score of 4.37.
The tasting participants described the sheng from the Man Lu Mountains as a young sheng with a strawberry flavor, fruity aroma and a sweet aftertaste. The Legend Mengku Bingcha from Hongzhonghong was noted as a sweetish soft tasty sheng with a salty aroma and a tart aftertaste. The sheng brick from Dragon Garden was praised for its balanced soft taste and aroma, and the Feng Yao nest for its very bright aroma and spicy intoxicating taste.
Thanks to everyone who participated in our tastings. As always, we would be happy if you could tell us about your tea tasting experience. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
