A gaiwan made from Yixing red clay, Duan Ni (Chinese: 段泥), is grainy to the touch and typically has an oily sheen. Gaiwans are traditionally used for steeping tea, and sometimes tea is drunk straight from the gaiwan. These gaiwans are made in the Wuxi region (无锡, wúxī), Jiangsu province (江苏, Jiāngsū).
The inscription on the gaiwan: “Jiang nan feng” (Chinese: 江南风, pinyin jiāngnán fēng), which is an abbreviation of the phrase “Jiang nan feng jing” (江南风景, Jiāngnán fēngjǐng), literally “landscapes of Jiangnan province.”
Jiangnan is a historical region in China, occupying the right bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River (扬子江, yángzǐjiāng).
The gaiwan depicts a landscape typical of the region: vegetation and houses along the river, as well as a bridge. Landscapes of the Jiangnan region are often the subject of paintings.

It is mined in China, in the area of the city of Yixing. All types of Yixing clay consist of mica, kaolinite, quartz and hematite.

The main reason for the extraordinary popularity of Yixing clay teapots is the excellent quality of the source material. Purple clay does not affect the aroma and taste of the brewed tea, it is able to absorb the tea infusion, due to which teapots that have been used for a long time have the ability to give aroma to simple boiling water. Tea brewed in a Yixing clay teapot cools down quite slowly, and the handle of the teapot does not heat up. Today, Yixing teapots have acquired the status of real works of art.
