Dongfang Meiren from Shiding
trans. "Oriental Beauty" from Shidin
东方美人 – Dōng Fāng Měi Rén.
Oriental Beauty or Dong Fang Mei Ren is a unique Taiwanese tea variety that deserves to be called Beauty with a capital B.
During production, this tea achieves the highest oxidation level of any oolong (approximately 70-80%). At first glance, you might even think it's a red tea, but according to production techniques, Dongfang Meiren is classified as a dark oolong.
Eastern Beauty is prepared from a tea bush brought to Taiwan from Northern Fujian in the 19th century, and thus Dong Fang Mei Ren is a distant relative of the well-known Da Hong Pao.
The most interesting and impressive fact is that Oriental Beauty is an organically pure tea. Imagine, Dong Fang Mei Ren is harvested exclusively in the summer, and the most important component, one might even say the main producer, of this tea is cicadas. Cicadas are green flies that feed on the sap of tea leaves, causing the tea to begin to oxidize even before harvest. During this attack, the tea bush activates its self-defense: the leaves produce large quantities of polyphenols and tannins. These growing and brewing techniques give Oriental Beauty its unique fruity aroma.
Dongfang Meiren tea is produced using yellowed leaves and a large number of buds, and cicadas are proof of the tea's organic nature, as the vast majority of farmers now spray their tea bushes with pesticides to repel cicadas.
This is a unique product created by the fusion of nature, represented by cicadas, and the skill of tea farmers.
The aroma, when warmed by the breath, is intoxicating, rich, and slightly sweet. Tropical fruits are discernible: mango, papaya, and milk apple, along with the distinct scent of flowers: violet, orchid, and lily.
After washing the tea leaves, the aroma intensifies, adding a melodic profile of linden honey.
The taste of this oriental beauty is poetic and aristocratic. Tropical fruits, linden honey, and fruity nuances with a pleasant tartness harmonize beautifully.
The aftertaste is indescribable and very rich. A honeyed sweetness lingers on the lips for a long time, with hints of tropical fruit and floral nectar.
The tea withstands six full steeps at a ratio of 5 g of dry tea leaves per 150 ml porcelain gaiwan. The resulting infusion is clear and pure, with a bright honey color.
After just two cups, a pure and meditative tea state sets in. This brings harmony and tranquility, spiritual upliftment, clarity of thought, openness, and a sense of belonging to the world around us.
The oriental beauty of Dongfang Meiren from Shiding is a unique tea with an exquisite flavor and an unforgettable aftertaste. It's poetry in a bowl, a tea you'll want to savor cup after cup, sharing your impressions with loved ones.
