"Dong Fan Mei Zhen"
trans. "Oriental Beauty"
东方美人 – Dōng Fāng Měi Rén.
Oriental Beauty or Dong Fang Mei Ren is a unique Taiwanese tea variety that deserves to be called Beauty with a capital letter.
During production, this tea reaches the maximum oxidation among oolongs (approximately 70-80%). At first acquaintance with it, you can even think that this is a red tea, but according to production technologies, Dongfang Meiren belongs to dark oolongs.
Oriental Beauty is prepared from a tea bush brought to Taiwan from Northern Fujian in the 19th century, and thus Dong Fang Mei Ren is a distant relative of the well-known Da Hong Pao.
The most interesting and impressive fact is that Oriental Beauty is an organically pure tea. Imagine, Dong Fang Mei Ren is collected exclusively in the summer and the most important component, one might even say the main producer, of this tea are cicadas. A cicada is a green fly that feeds on the juice of tea leaves, due to which, even before harvesting, the tea begins to oxidize, because during such an attack, the tea bush turns on its self-defense: the leaves produce a large amount of polyphenols and tannins. Such features of growing and preparing tea give Oriental Beauty a unique fruity aroma.
Yellowed leaves and a large number of buds are used in the production of Dongfang Meiren tea, and cicadas are proof of the organic nature of the tea, since the vast majority of farmers now spray tea bushes with pesticides to scare away cicadas.
We encourage everyone to try this unique product, created by the fusion of nature in the form of cicadas and the skill of tea farmers.
The aroma of dry tea leaves is soft, spicy-buttery, with a note of plum wine, with a hint of aged white tea Bai Mu Dan. After the first steeping, the tea opened up with a velvety aroma with nuances of caramel, Turkish halva with nuts and a faint note of the Sagan Daile plant.
The taste of the brewed tea is bright, velvety and strict, with a hint of Sagan Dail, old white tea, nuts in a linen bag, buckwheat honey. By the 3rd steeping, the infusion acquires a cautious tartness, the taste of taiga moss, citrus fruits with a sweetish profile. Eastern Beauty tea can be brewed up to 6 times, forming a transparent amber-colored infusion with a velvety refreshing aftertaste. For brewing, you will need water with a temperature of 90-95 °C, 5 g of dry tea leaves and 150 ml of a porcelain gaiwan or a teapot made of Yixing clay.
Dongfang Meiren from Shaxian is an excellent oolong tea that gives peace and tranquility, balances and relaxes well. Due to its particularly affordable price, unique taste and aroma, this tea is an excellent option for daily tea drinking.
