Dong Fang Mei Ren – Eastern Beauty.
东方美人 – Dōng Fāng Měi Rén.
Oriental Beauty or Dong Fang Mei Ren is a unique Taiwanese tea variety that deserves to be called Beauty with a capital B.
During production, this tea achieves the highest oxidation level of any oolong (approximately 70-80%). At first glance, you might even think it's a red tea, but according to production techniques, Dongfang Meiren is classified as a dark oolong.
Eastern Beauty is prepared from a tea bush brought to Taiwan from Northern Fujian in the 19th century, and thus Dong Fang Mei Ren is a distant relative of the well-known Da Hong Pao.
The most interesting and impressive fact is that Oriental Beauty is an organically pure tea. Imagine, Dong Fang Mei Ren is harvested exclusively in the summer, and the most important component, one might even say the main producer, of this tea is cicadas. Cicadas are green flies that feed on the sap of tea leaves, causing the tea to begin to oxidize even before harvest. During this attack, the tea bush activates its self-defense: the leaves produce large quantities of polyphenols and tannins. These growing and brewing techniques give Oriental Beauty its unique fruity aroma.
Dongfang Meiren tea is produced using yellowed leaves and a large number of buds, and cicadas are proof of the tea's organic nature, as the vast majority of farmers now spray their tea bushes with pesticides to repel cicadas.
We encourage everyone to try this unique product, created by the fusion of nature, represented by the cicada, and the skill of tea farmers.
When warmed by the breath of the tea leaf, a sweet, fragrant aroma is felt, with notes of fragrant flowers in the middle of an open field on a hot summer day, and honey from this wildflower.
After washing, the Eastern Beauty reveals its beauty with a poetic, fragrant aroma, in which fruity wine, caramel, vanilla, and tropical fruits can be discerned.
The brewed tea tastes pure like spring water, sweet like honey, thick and rich. The flavor is fruity and floral, with notes of orchid and flower honey.
The third steep adds a slight coolness and a touch of astringency with hints of ripe persimmon. This tea can withstand six full steeps with a ratio of just 5 g of dry tea leaves per 150 ml gaiwan. This oolong should be brewed with high-quality water at a temperature of 90-95°C.
The finished infusion is clear, golden in color, and leaves a sweet aftertaste with berry notes and hints of spring primroses.
Dong Fang Mei Ren from Hsinchu allows you to pause, momentarily escaping the daily grind. It relaxes the body, helps you gather your thoughts, creates a light meditative state, and sets you up for conversation.
