Funnily enough, the original name was xiang fanshu (Russian: sweet potato aroma, Chinese: 香番薯, pinyin: xiāng fānshǔ), because when brewed, it produces a unique aroma similar to sweet potato.
The plant is a shrub with large leaves and medium-sized buds. Reproduction is asexual. The cultivar is the result of centuries of natural hybridization of different varieties of "shui xian" (Chinese: 水仙, pinyin: shuǐxiān) bushes on Mount Fenghuang, followed by subsequent selection. The ancestors of the tea garden manager, Wei Jianzhi, planted the mother bushes and cultivated them. The older bushes were primarily propagated by cuttings, and later developed asexual reproduction. The mother bush died in 1978, at 150 years old.
The dried leaves are large, dark brown, and have an oily, moist texture. A distinct honey aroma, along with hints of orchid and fragrant herbs, is evident. The floral bouquet is very persistent and refined. The infusion is clear and yellow. The tea is high in amino acids, vitamins, tea polyphenols, alkaloids, and other beneficial substances. It has an oily consistency, rich flavor, and a sweet aftertaste. When consumed, notes of honey and orchid are felt, filling the mouth with a rich aroma. This tea is called "four perfections," referring to its beautiful shape, unusual color, magnificent aroma, and sweet taste. This variety is capable of providing a myriad of impressions.

In Guangdong Province, the southernmost and warmest province of China, in the counties of Chao'an, Shaoping, and Qiaoling, they make special Dan Cong (Single Bush) oolongs. The most famous of this group of oolongs is Feng Huang Dan Cong. It, like other varieties, is collected from a specific bush. As a result, each batch has its own unique characteristics.
