The tea is named after the majestic Daxueshan Mountains and literally translates as "great snow mountain." This name speaks for itself, as the peaks of Daxueshan are periodically covered in snow. There are three Daxueshan tea-harvesting regions: Mengku, Bandong, and Yongde. The tea leaves for these cakes are picked in Mengku, where the tea begins to grow at an altitude of 2,200 meters, with the highest point reaching 3,233 meters above sea level. This is the home of large-leaf high-mountain tea. The cakes are produced in what is arguably Yunnan's most famous pu'er region, Xishuangbanna, where the tea leaves are delivered directly from Daxueshan.
The two top leaves and a bud from woody trees are used as raw materials. This tea is considered an early tea (varieties harvested before the All-Made Tea Festival). It has a clear, highly aromatic infusion, a heavy aroma, a rich flavor, and a sweet aftertaste. It is hand-made using a press.
This pancake is loosely pressed and easily separated leaf by leaf, making it easy to separate the required portion for brewing. The raw material consists of whole, unbroken buds and leaves.
Paying attention to the aroma of the dried leaf, you'll notice notes of dried apricots and dry straw with a slight tartness. The aroma of the wet leaf, however, reveals a different flavor—rich notes of prunes and rotted leaves.
The infusion has a pleasant light honey hue. The flavor is soft and smooth, without excessive astringency. This tea is designed for long sipping; the flavor develops gradually, becoming increasingly rich by the fourth or fifth steeping.
