Taicha 18 Hao Hongyu Hongcha: Ruby of Taiwan
Taicha 18 Hao Hongyu Hongcha ( Chinese: 台茶18号红玉红茶, pinyin: táichá 18 háo hóngyù hóngchá), or Taiwanese Red Tea No. 18 Ruby, is a truly unique tea that deserves special attention. Its name speaks for itself: "Ruby" is more than just a metaphor. The infusion of this tea has a rich ruby color that is simply mesmerizing.
Origin and history
Origin: Nantou County (Chinese: 南投縣, nántóu xiàn), Taiwan. This tea variety was developed in Taiwan through painstaking breeding. Its birthplace is Nantou County, where tea plantations are located in the picturesque surroundings of Sun Moon Lake (Chinese: 日月潭, pinyin: rìyuètán).
After more than 50 years of research by the organization now called the Tea Research and Extension Station, a new tea variety was developed on plantations around Sun Moon Lake. It was bred by crossing Assamica B-729 (Myanmar) and B-607 (Camellia formosensis), a local Taiwanese wild plant. The resulting cultivar was introduced in 1999. It was named "Ruby" or Taicha 18 (internally known as TRES No. 18).
Currently, the total area under Hongyu tea is just over ten hectares. The tea gardens are located at relatively low altitudes. The average annual temperature is around 23ºC. Harvesting takes place from spring to summer. When harvested by hand, one bud and two or three leaves are plucked.
Taste and aroma
Hongyu Hongcha has a vibrant and memorable flavor. It harmoniously combines the richness of Assam teas with delicate fruity notes, particularly strawberry and caramel. The tea's aroma is simply enchanting: juicy, slightly sweet, with light woody undertones.
Main taste characteristics:
- Softness: the tea is not astringent and has a smooth texture.
- Low tannins: this makes it pleasant to drink even for those who are not used to strong teas.
- Pleasant aftertaste: long and warming.
Appearance
The dried tea consists of uniform, dark-brown leaves with a distinctive twist. The infusion is clear, amber-colored, with a ruby tint.
Health benefits
Like many other black teas, Hongyu Hongcha is rich in antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and slow the aging process. It also contains vitamins and minerals essential for maintaining a healthy body.
How to brew
To fully appreciate the flavor of this tea, it is recommended to brew it at a temperature of approximately 90°C. Steeping time is 3-5 minutes. The tea can be steeped again, but the steeping time should be increased.
Taicha 18 Hao Hongyu Hongcha is a true gift for connoisseurs of quality tea. Its rich flavor, exquisite aroma, and beneficial properties make it one of the most popular black teas in the world.
