What is terrace tea: the unique taste of mountain plantations
Terraced tea is a special type of tea grown on terraced fields located on mountain slopes. Such plantations are created by artificial terracing of slopes, which allows for efficient use of land and the creation of unique microclimatic conditions for growing tea bushes.
Due to human factors such as planting, harvesting and pruning, these tea trees do not have a clearly defined trunk and the branches are low. In conditions of high planting density and limited space for the trees to grow, the tea leaves become small, thin and graceful. These features are especially noticeable in densely planted tea gardens.
Terraced tea became popular in China in the 1930s and 1940s, when the first terraced tea plantation was opened in Menghai. In the 1980s, terraced tea gardens became widespread in Yunnan Province, which contributed to the development of the entire industry.
Why is terraced tea special?
Unique taste: Due to the characteristics of the soil, climate and microclimate created by the terraces, the tea acquires a unique taste and aroma. Each region with terraced plantations produces its own unique tea variety.
High Quality: Traditionally, tea from terraced plantations is hand-picked, allowing only the finest leaves and buds to be selected.
Eco-friendliness: Terraced plantations are often located in remote mountainous areas where the environment is cleaner. This allows tea to be grown without the use of large quantities of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
There are almost no bush trees in the Yunnan terraced gardens. They are mainly woody tea species with large leaves. After artificial cultivation and pruning, these trees become less short, but their appearance does not change. If all restrictions are removed, such small trees will again become as large as wild ones.
In terms of tea quality, the key factors are the variety of tea tree and its growing conditions. Some varieties, such as Menghai Big Leaf, Mengku Big Leaf, and Yiwu Green Tea, are considered the best of their respective regions.
Many famous brands of Puerh, such as 7542, 7572 and 7581, are made from terraced plantations. Terraced Puerh is therefore the main type of tea in the industry, and its emergence has greatly contributed to the development of the entire industry.
