The most popular tea in Taiwan is Dongding Oolong.
Taiwanese sociologists conducted a survey of the ten most popular teas on the island. Residents aged 15 to 65 were interviewed. It turned out that Dongding Oolong is beyond competition. Sociologists also calculated the popularity rating and frequency of consumption of other teas.
- In first place, as already mentioned, is Dong Ding Oolong, preferred by 32.45% of respondents.
- In second place in popularity is high-mountain Alishan oolong (its taste contains notes of oolong and green tea) – 17.04% of respondents.
- In third place is Wenshan Baozhong Oolong with 10.31%.
- In fourth place is Zhiyuetan Hongcha red Taiwanese tea, also 10.31% of respondents.
- Fifth place is occupied by Alishan Zhulu (pearl drop oolong tea from the Ali Mountains) – 8.36%.
- Sixth place: oolong Dong Fan Mei Ren (oriental beauty, another name is baihao oolong) - 7.48%.
- Seventh place – Muzha Tieguanyin – 3.27%.
- Eighth - green tea Sanxia Longjing - 2.83%.
- Sunbai Changqingcha - 1.45% in ninth place.
- Longchuan is last at 1.07%.
Dongding Oolong is mainly collected in Nantoulugu. The tender top leaves are collected from the bushes intended for making oolong. It belongs to the lightly semi-fermented teas. The processing technology is similar to the processing of Baozhong. For a long time, Dongding has occupied a leading position in sales in the tea market of Taiwan. Some call this tea "the god among teas", and indeed the tea has unique taste qualities.
High-mountain oolong "Gaoshancha" is almost the same as Wenshan baozhong, only twisted into hemispheres. The name high-mountain is accepted because this tea grows in mountainous areas at an altitude of 1000 meters. Due to the peculiarities of the high-mountain climate, this tea accumulates little microelements that give bitterness and astringency. This gives the tea a pleasant, soft, lively and sweetish aroma.
Wenshan Baozhong - the name of this tea comes from the way Fujian tea is packaged. Once upon a time, peasants in villages packed tea in paper briquettes of a quadrangular shape. And the packaging in Chinese sounds like "Bao", "Zhong" is translated as a variety.
As we can see from this small study, Taiwanese people prefer oolong tea, a lightly fermented tea with a fresh aroma and refined taste.
