Bulan Tea Mountain
Bu Lan Shan is one of the most famous mountains in Yunnan, it is located 80 km south of Menghai County, its area is more than one thousand square kilometers and in fact Bu Lan Shan is one of the longest mountains, or more precisely, it consists of a mountain range. Bu Lan Shan borders Burma (tea trees also grow there) and it happens that due to such close proximity, raw materials brought to China from Burma are passed off as puer from Bu Lan Mountain. The reason for this is cheaper Burmese tea raw materials with a similar aroma and taste profile, which can be sold at a higher price, passing off as the famous Bu Lan Shan puer.
The Bulan Shan area is mainly inhabited by the Bulan ethnic group (in Chinese 布朗族, Bùlǎngzú). The population is more than 10 thousand people, they live at an altitude of 1989 meters above sea level on Mount Sanduo (三垛山, Sānduǒ shān) and the hills located at the confluence of the Nanlanhe and Nanjuhe rivers located at an altitude of 535 meters above sea level. The Bulan are one of the oldest ethnic groups, according to legends they are the descendants of the ancient Pu, one can say, the founders of tea art, they were the first to cultivate tea trees and make tea from them. In addition to the Bulan ethnic group, in the north of Bu Lan Shan live such ethnic groups as the Lahu (in Chinese 拉祜族, Lāhùzú) and Hani.
It is also worth mentioning one special place on Mount Bulan - this is the village of Lao Ban Zhang. (老班章, Lǎo Bān Zhāng) and the adjacent tea gardens. In modern tea culture, pu'er made in the village of Lao Ban Zhang can be considered the King of Tea and the most expensive pu'er among all the mountains and regions of Yunnan. Prices for raw materials (maocha – 毛茶, máochá) in 2014 have already reached 60-70 thousand rubles per kilogram, and this is not even a finished product, but a semi-finished product.
The taste and aroma of puer made from Bulanshan tea trees can vary greatly from one another due to the large territorial differences: altitude differences, soil diversity, tea-making traditions of different nationalities, etc. It is often possible to find that puer from a certain village can be named after it to more accurately organize the taste profile of Bulan Mountain.
We recommend that you familiarize yourself with both this famous mountain and the various factories that produce puerh from the raw materials of this region (for example, puerhs from the Garden of the Dragon factory, the Tea Line brand, and farm collectible cakes). Every puerh lover should learn to distinguish and understand the taste characteristics of different mountains.
